About the Novel

A romance novel about a boy who falls for a minister's daughter whose quiet life contrasted with his own. A Walk to Remember is Nicholas Sparks's defining book.

Every April, when the wind blows from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister.

A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it.

Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood...

Did You Know?-

That Jamie was named after Nicholas's editor, Jamie Raab?

That Landon is the name of his third son?

That Nicholas Sparks recorded his own reading for the audio version of the novel? A Walk to Remember PDF Free Ebook Download | Nicholas Sparks

There was a time when the world was sweeter....when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats.... Every April, when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High. Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once sworn that he'd been in love. Certainly the last person he thought he'd fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town's Baptist minister....Jamie, who was destined to show him the depths of the human heart-and the joy and pain of living. The inspiration for this novel came from Nicholas Sparks's sister: her life and her courage. From the internationally bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, comes his most moving story yet....

Summary Of The Novel

A Walk to Remember is a novel by American writer Nicholas Sparks, released in October 1999. The novel, set in 1958-'59 in Beaufort, North Carolina, is a story of two teenagers who fall in love with each other despite the disparity of their personalities. A Walk to Remember is adapted in the film of the same name. A Walk to Remember PDF Free Ebook Download | Nicholas Sparks

The play is a great success, and in a pivotal scene, in which the father is supposed to notice the ravishing beauty of the angel, Landon is shocked by how beautiful Jamie looks in her white dress; she is wearing a touch of makeup and has taken her long hair out of a bun and let it fall past her shoulders. The other students in the school are as surprised by Jamie's appearance as Landon is, but her upgraded social status does not last, and Jamie is soon relegated to her former social status.

Landon Carter was never the sort to fall for a quiet girl like Jamie Sullivan. A Baptist minister's daughter, Jamie carries the Bible with her wherever she goes. A twist of fate has Landon asking Jamie out to the homecoming dance, and the events that follow slowly show Landon the depths of Jamie's heart, one that he can't resist even though Jamie is insistent on not wanting anything to do with relationships.

Fifty-seven-year-old Landon Carter narrates the novel, reflecting on events from 40 years in the past. The novel opens with a Prologue, in which the older Landon, living in the same North Carolina town as he did at the age of 17, stands near the Baptist church that figures prominently in the novel and gets himself in the mindset of his 17-year-old self. The story begins in 1958 and is, Landon tells us, both joyful and sad.

Seventeen-year-old Landon is a senior at Beaufort High School, which collaborates each year with Southern Baptist Church on a Christmas play called The Christmas Angel. The play, written by Reverend Hegbert Sullivan, the minister of the church, tells the story of a man who is so grief-stricken over the death of his wife (while giving birth to their only child) that he is not much of a father to his child. An angel appears to the man, and she admonishes him to be a better father; she also performs a small miracle for the family on Christmas morning. The popular play, performed in the local playhouse, features seniors from the high school. A Walk to Remember PDF Free Ebook Download | Nicholas Sparks

In the last chapter of the novel, 57-year-old Landon reflects on the 40 years that have passed since his wedding to Jamie. He still loves her and has not removed his wedding ring in all those years. When he reveals that he now believes in miracles, readers are left to ponder the ending: Did Jamie die, or did a miracle save her life?

Book Reviews

#1. Being an ardent reader, I knew a thing or two about romance novels & I was pretty much aware that the master story-teller Nicholas Sparks would have pen downed a story which would never fail to spark!

This was the 4th Nicholas Spark's novel I've read, after his best seller "The Notebook," "Safe Haven" (which was my personal favourite, up until I finished reading this one) & "The Lucky One."

The plot begins with a 57 years old Landen, starting to narrate his story of his final year in his high-school at Beaufort, North Carolina while he was 17. The story revolves around Landen, a carefree typical 17 year old bloke, and Jamie, not popular amongst her peers, but a very sweet, kind hearted and a religious girl.

Landen happens to ask a favor from Jamie, the daughter of minister to partner him for the Homecoming dance, as he is left with no choice. When Jamie accepts his request, the real drama unfolds and a very sweet, tendering romance starts. A start, that would not set the world ablaze, but the way things unfold will really make us feel for the duo. I learned what are THE GREAT attributes of true love is all about from this novel and when Laden says in that poignancy "Jamie was the truest essence of that very description (of love)," my eyes were filled with tears!!! Honestly, couldn't think of a better romance, though the story was very painful, yet their love was so pure!!!

Spark's first novel "The Notebook" had a caption "The love story to end all love stories," but after finished reading this, I felt "A walk to remember", even surpassed "The Notebook"!!! A Walk to Remember PDF Free Ebook Download | Nicholas Sparks

"A walk to remember" - Pure love personified!!!

#2. Finished reading A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks.
After reading the reviews of the book I always wonder that y people cry after reading his books.
And when I cried (after reading his book ) I got my answer.
Must say that when I was reading this book I felt that I was actually there with Landon and Jamie.
Thank u Nicholas Sparks for a wonderful read. :-)
Keep going.

#3. A Walk to Remember details the story of Jamie Sullivan, a preacher's daughter who seems to know everything, and Landon Carter, the boy who would never be tempted by Jamie in real life. The plot is predictable enough, even if you haven't seen the movie. I won't spoil the ending here, but it leaves quite a lot to be desired.

I wanted to like this book, since so many people I knew enjoyed it, but I ended up hating it. The material was far too idyllic in some parts, and overly sanguine in others. I could see how Nicholas Sparks fans could like it, but it didn't have enough heart or plot to keep me interested. A Walk to Remember PDF Free Ebook Download | Nicholas Sparks

Movie Adaptation

View on IMDB here

A Walk to Remember was adapted in the film of the same name, becoming Sparks' second novel adapted to the big screen after Message in a Bottle in 1999.

The movie was directed by Adam Shankman and produced by Denise DiNovi and Hunt Lowry for Warner Bros.; the film premiered on January 25, 2002.

Sparks sold the film rights to Warner Bros. in December 1998, months before the publication of the novel.

The film, starring singer and actress Mandy Moore (Jamie) and Shane West (Landon), is set in the late 1990s. Sparks and the producer thought that because the film was suitable for teenagers "because of the message it provided", they had to make the adaptation more contemporary.
