About the Novel

Title: The Jungle Book

Author: Rudyard Kipling

The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by English author Rudyard Kipling. The stories were first published in magazines in 1893–94. The original publications contain illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling. Kipling was born in India and spent the first six years of his childhood there. After about ten years in England, he went back to India and worked there for about six-and-a-half years. These stories were written when Kipling lived in Vermont. There is evidence that it was written for his daughter Josephine, who died in 1899 aged six, after a rare first edition of the book with a poignant handwritten note by the author to his young daughter was discovered at the National Trust's Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire in 2010.

Summary of the Novel

The Jungle Books can be regarded as classic stories told by an adult to children. But they also constitute a complex literary work of art in which the whole of Kipling's philosophy of life is expressed in miniature. They are best known for the 'Mowgli' stories; the tale of a baby abandoned and brought up by wolves, educated in the ways and secrets of the jungle by Kaa the python, Baloo the bear, and Bagheera the black panther. The stories, a mixture of fantasy, myth, and magic, are underpinned by Kipling's abiding preoccupation with the theme of self-discovery, and the nature of the 'Law'

Film Adaptation

The Jungle Book is a 1967 American animated film produced by Walt Disney Productions. Inspired by the Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, it is the 19th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.

Ben Kingsley has been tapped to voice Bagheera in Disney’s new live-action take on “The Jungle Book,” directed by Jon Favreau.

Idris Elba is on board to voice Shere Khan and Scarlett Johansson is set to voice Kaa.

Based on the Rudyard Kipling book, the story follows an orphan boy raised in the jungle with the help of a pack of wolves, a bear and a black panther. Kingsley will voice the loyal black panther who watches over Mowgli.

Disney is in a bit of a race with Warner Bros., which is also working on a “Jungle Book” film with Andy Serkis at the helm.

Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it was the last to be produced by Walt Disney, who died during its production. The plot follows Mowgli, a feral child raised in the Indian jungle by wolves, as his friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear try to convince him into leaving the jungle before the evil tiger Shere Khan arrives.
